How To Increase On-Line Web Site Traffic Through Improved Search Engine Ranking

Home > Site Creation > Page Optimization Tools

In order to make money, you need visitors.  We call visitors "traffic" in the web-world.  To get traffic, you need to find key phrases (related to your site's content) that others are searching for to get improved search engine ranking. Then, make sure those key phrases are included on your sites related pages. The best tool, hands down, is Wordtracker.

Wordtracker

I use a traffic tool called Wordtracker.  There is a free trial version you can use that only analyzes MSN traffic and there is a 1-day, 1-week, 1-month, or 1-year subscription that does a more in-depth analysis and includes yahoo, google, and other major search engines.  I generally use the paid version for a 1-day or possibly 1-week subscription when starting a new site or section of my site and I use the free trial version for optimizing individual new pages that I add down the line. I will cover how both the free trial and paid versions work.

Using the Wordtracker 1-day or 1-week Subscription

Let's say you want to do the site about dogs.  With this tool, you would start by signing up at Wordtracker for a 1 day subscription.  You will get a confirmation email along with instructions on how to log in.  You then log in using your user name and password you chose.  You would see a screen like the one below. Choose Simple Search.

You then type in dogs as shown below.  Also choose to filter results so the results you seek are not displaced by objectionable phrases.  Choose 500 for number of results.  Hit Proceed.

You will see the most commonly searched phrases containing the word "dogs". You then scroll all the way down the page and choose "Select All".

The next page will give you options of search engines to choose.  I would suggest checking Yahoo or perhaps Yahoo and Google. Then hit proceed.

Now, you have your results!  From the list below, the phrase "Free Dog Adoptions" would be a good choice for optimizing traffic.  You would make a separate web page for this phrase in your site.  The web page would include "Free Dog Adoptions" in your title, description, your heading, and within the body of your page several times as shown on this sample "free dog adoptions" page.

In addition to the steps outlined above, you would want to repeat the simple search for "dogs" and then write down 2-10 of the highly searched phrases.

For example, dog breeds, dogs for sale, Free Dogs, and dog names are near the top for search popularity.  Now, do a simple search (like you did for the single word "dogs") for each phrase you wrote down - do not use quotes around the phrase.  For example, a simple search for dog breeds shows all the searches done for this phrase or phrases with these words. Many of these results did not show up in the broad search using only the word dogs because they were not in the top 500.  If you do a competition check, you find that the phrase 3 breeds of dog most likely to bite is searched for up to 8 times a day with no competition. Also, the phrase hybrid dog breeds is searched for as much as 37 times a day with little competition.  Build pages that center around these key phrases as was shown in the free dog adoptions sample page. Note that I have also created sample pages

There are much more extensive operations that can also be performed with the Wordtracker tool.  Check out the Support section of Wordtracker for comprehensive instructions.

Using the Wordtracker Free Trial Tool

The Wordtracker Free Trial is a nice tool for optimizing individual pages as you see a need to add them.  Despite its outstanding price (free!), it does a great job at targeting good key phrases.  It is just a bit limited as compared to the full version.  For step-by-step instructions, go to the page free-trial-instructions.
