How To Implement Your Internet Web Site Advertising

Home > Making Money From Your Site > Placing Ads On Your Site

When your site is completed and published, you need to place ads on your site.  There are many contextual Internet web site advertising services but I would recommend placing contextual ads provided by Google.  The program run by Google is easy to use, the ads match your website content very well, and payment is reliable.  I have tried a few others, and with the exception of Yahoo, the others fell short for me. The steps to placing these ads are given below:

  1. After your site is completed and published, you need to join Google Adsense.  You can do this by clicking on this Google banner >
This will take you to the sign-up page.  It is important that your site be complete and published before you do this since your site will need to be reviewed before you can be accepted.

  2. After being accepted, you will need to place code on each page of your site.  You do so by signing into Google Adsense as directed in the email sent to you. Click on AdSense for Content as shown below.

  3. You will see a screen like the one below.  If you are using the site template provided on this site, you would want to use 728 pixel wide ads.  I like to choose the Text and image ads in this unit option.  You usually get text ads and the occasional banner ad provides a little variety.  You should design a color palette to "blend in" to your site.  I like a white background with blue font for the links and blue or black text for the ad body. This makes the ad look like it "belongs" on your site.

  4. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see some code.  You select all of this code and insert it into your web page where you want it.  NOTE:  If you are using FrontPage, you will need to insert this into the page using the HTML mode and not the Normal or Design mode.

  5. Nothing more needs to be done unless you want to try a different size ad or use a different border. If you are trying something new on part of your site, I would recommend using Channels.  These optional tracking numbers allow you to track revenue for individual blocks of ads.  More information on AdSense Channels is given at the AdSense site.
